Crystals Round and Fancy stones size chart guide

Round Crystals and rhinestones conversion Chart in pp, ss & mm

19/04/2017
Crystals Round and Fancy stones size chart guide

There are a wide variety of rhinestones and crystals used for various purposes and industries, such as jewelry or fashion. The rhinestones are used for gluing, embedding, sewing, and more.

Tip: To help you navigate through all the crystal shapes and sizes of Cup Chain's supply you may find links to products for each dimension directly from the chart below.

In this article, we have come to make some order in all the dimensions phrases in which it is customary to describe the sizes of rhinestones and crystals:

In general, we are talking about three types of criteria that are commonly used when describing round crystals and rhinestones.

Once you understand the difference between the sizes, it will be easier for you to look for precisely what you need for your artwork.

For example, when it comes to round rhinestones made of glass material, flatbacks, or pointed back, it is usually more common to use SS size.

And when talking about rhinestones made of plastic or acrylic, it is common to often use millimeters.

What is the connection? How do we know how to describe the measure of crystal I have and how to avoid mistakes?

So let's go over the differences:

MM (millimeters)

Millimeter size is usually used when describing flat back, pointed back 'sew on. For example, Rivoli 12mm means that the stone's diameter is 12 millimeters.

Millimeters are also the expected standard for describing other shapes that are not round - like fancy stones, for example, the rhinestone shape Navette 15X7mm.

SS (stone size)

When we talk about SS, we mean only a round shape and usually smaller or more accurate measurements; the reason for using other names for measurement is that a different aesthetic description was needed, which would be acceptable to those engaged in the field.

For example, when we measure the popular stone 39ss in millimeters, we get a range of 8.16-8.41 mm; it is difficult to speak in ranges of numbers and not in a uniform and absolute number.

PP (pearl plate)

We will use a PP size definition when it comes to round and tiny rhinestones. Between the dimensions of the PP, there can be minor differences of only 0.1 millimeters.

For example, pp1 is only 0.80-0.90 mm, and pp2 is 0.90-1.00 mm.

According to Swarovski's conversion table, the smallest PP is pp33 4.1-4.2 millimeters.

The term "pearl plate" refers to a method of pearl sizing by placing them on a plate with holes, and the size is determined by the hole that the pearl falls through.

As you can see from the table below, there is an overlap between all the pp's and millimeters dimensions, as the round stone can be measured differently.

In this chart, you can see the number and the actual millimeters and inches of each stone.
